The Low-GL Diet and your metabolism

Simply put, the low-GL diet works because on a low-GL diet, you burn more fat than on a low-fat, low-calorie diet. That’s a big statement. You may be thinking, “How can this be possible?” The answer lies in your metabolic rate.

When you turn food into glucose, or store it as fat, you use your body’s metabolism to do so. The speed of your metabolism is known as your metabolic rate and is partly inherited but is mainly linked to what you eat and how active you are. The speed of your metabolism changes depending on the level of blood sugar in your body – the faster your metabolism, the faster you lose weight.

Your body needs a certain level of blood sugars to stay alive; therefore with a low-calorie diet, which produces very little blood sugar, your body feels under threat. Your body then tries harder to “hang on” to blood sugar in the system by slowing down your metabolic rate. This means that when your metabolic rate slows down, your weight loss also slows down explaining why on a low-calorie diet it is difficult to lose weight – especially over the long term.

On a low-GL diet, regular GL-controlled meals keep your blood sugar levels stable which means your metabolic rate doesn’t need to switch to survival mode. Therefore, because your metabolic rate doesn’t slow down, weight loss will continue at a healthy rate. With the low-GL diet, you feed your body “fast-burning” foods that don’t turn into fat which means your body can use the energy quickly and then get down to business of burning off existing fat!

Your metabolism and the low-GL diet in a nutshell:

  • On a low-GL diet you will not turn glucose into fat which means that you will not gain weight.
  • On a low-GL diet you will not go into “starvation” or “survival mode”, ensuring your body will continue to help you to burn the fat you have.

EXERCISE AND YOUR METABOLIC RATE

Exercise is the fastest way to improve your metabolic rate. It also helps you to overcome fatigue – a common complaint among those who are overweight. Combining the low-GL diet with a regular exercise regime is a sure-fire way to speed up your metabolism and put you on the path towards long-term weight loss.
