Patrick knows that as parents, you want to give your children the best nutrition possible – but sometimes, the fast pace at which we lives gets in the way. An afternoon snack packed the right energy sources (low GL) and vitamins and minerals is vital. Patrick suggests quick and easy smoothies and juices that you can prepare the night before and grab on-the-go.
This smoothie needs no explanation – it’s quick to make, quick to take and will give your children (and you) a good kick of energy. The recipe contains Tahini which is rich in minerals such as phosphorus, lecithin, magnesium, potassium and iron and one of the best sources of calcium. Tahini is also high in vitamin E and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5 and B15. It helps promote healthy cell growth and is made up of 20% complete protein (higher than most seeds and nuts) which helps to lower the GL of the meal. Tahini is now more readily available in SA and can be found in health stores, Dis-Chem and quality food stores. The perfect snack before an afternoon activity or before homework time.
Just blend the ingredients and BOOM! You’re done.
1 handful of strawberries
½ banana (remember that bananas are high GL so don’t be tempted to use a whole one, half is enough)
100g low-fat, plain live yoghurt
1 tablespoon of Tahini (Tahini is a paste made from ground sesame seeds)
Dairy Free energy tonic
This is a dairy free juice to help give you and your children that extra boost you need at the end of the week. It is high in Vitamins C and E, calcium, Iron, sodium, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, beta – carotene, fibre, natural sugars, amino acids, sulphur, niacin and folic acid.
½ fresh medium pineapple
1 handful raspberries
1 handful strawberries
4 ice cubes
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1 tablespoon macadamia nut butter
Juice the pineapple and pour into a blender. Add raspberries, strawberries, chia seeds, macadamia nut butter and ice. Blend until smooth and creamy.
