DIGESTION: THE KEY TO GOOD GUT HEALTH

The root to a happy and healthy lifestyle starts within the gut. In this article Patrick shares his tips on how you can restore balance in the body by maintaining a healthy gut.

“You are what you can digest and absorb!” says Patrick.

Your gut has more immune cells than the rest of your body and therefore any reactions you have, to the foods you eat, can shut down a complex sequence that leads to proper digestion, absorption and elimination.

“An unhealthy gut can impact your mental health, weight and lead to a number of other digestive disorders such as constipation, bloating, intermittent diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The knock-on effect of these complications is that it disrupts the entire body – including the body’s ability to detox and to adequately arm itself against harmful bacteria. Maintaining a healthy gut can result in the keeping the rest of your body healthy” says Patrick.

Patrick’s tips on digesting food:

  1. CHEW your food thoroughly, this is the critical first stage of digestion. Chewing does more than just send a signal to your digestive system on what’s to come, the salivary glands in the mouth release an enzyme called ptyalin which assist in the breakdown of carbohydrates into smaller pieces.
  2. DRINK plenty of water – fluids in the body help transport nutrients, digest food and keep the body hydrated. Aim for at least 1.5 litres a day.
  3. ENZYME-FRIENDLY FOODS – where possible get the most from enzyme-friendly foods such as pineapple, papaya, sprouted beans, seeds and fermented foods such as yoghurts.
